Community Spotlight

Congrats to our very own Jean Tidd. Jean was recently featured as an ADHD guest expert for Stress Free Psych NP, a resource built for psychiatric nurse practitioners looking to sharpen their diagnostic and clinical skills.

What Jean Brought to the Conversation

The feature tackles a question that comes up constantly in clinical circles: is ADHD overdiagnosed, or underdiagnosed? The research points clearly to the latter, especially in adults, where cultural norms, stigma, and gaps in mental health care often keep ADHD from being recognized until much later in life.

Jean’s contribution centered on what she’s learned over more than 30 years of supporting ADHD diagnosis and care: the most reliable signs of adult ADHD often aren’t the obvious ones. Hyperactivity and impulsivity tend to get the spotlight, but subtler patterns, like chronic lateness, trouble estimating how long tasks will take, or difficulty completing multi-step activities, are often the more telling clues. She also speaks to the “interest-based nervous system” at the heart of ADHD, where the challenge isn’t a lack of attention but difficulty regulating it, which is why someone can hyperfocus for hours on one thing and struggle to start another.

Why This Recognition Matters

With no formal national guidelines yet in place for adult ADHD treatment, many clinicians are leaning on experience, continuing education, and insight from specialists like Jean to fill the gap. Being sought out for that expertise reflects the depth of knowledge Jean brings to every client relationship, not just to clinical audiences.
